Grassroots Democracy: Leadership and Power - HONORS


Course Description

Applied and theoretical training for students of social justice, this course is a multidisciplinary exploration of social change and popular democratic action with a focus on the meaning and development of political power in modern democracies. Topics to be explored include: gender and race sensitive approaches to leadership style, institutional and mass forums for civic engagement, mass recruitment and mobilization, consciousness development, democratic ethics, and strategic and tactical action. As an honors course the students will be expected to complete extra assignments to gain deeper insight into the issues raised in this class.

POLI-017H.1EZ: Honors class, need permission from instructor to add, please attend class on first week of the quarter and obtain an Add Code. Fully ONLINE. This class involves 12 hours of active, hands-on, work making a difference in our communities. The course has been modified so that this does not involve more time than a regular class. This is an online class that does not have scheduled meetings. Students can log in anytime to do the required weekly course work. Students must have access to a computer, the internet and an individual email address. We recommend a laptop or desktop computer to successfully complete the course; a tablet or phone may not be adequate for all assignments and tests.
